Welcome back to another round of Girls TV Recap. This year, we will follow season five and the perils that Hannah (Lena Dunham) and her friends face as they grow up and learn how to be mature... hopefully. What new experiences will they face? Come back every Friday for the latest recap including thoughts and predictions for each episode. Will it remain one of the best comedies on TV? You'll have to read to find out.
As the title suggests, this episode is all about love stories. While it doesn't quite make sense considering that Hannah and Fran (Jake Lacy) have broken up, it does manage to show the funny way in which everyone loves each other. With everyone now back in New York, it's time to get back to the good old days. However, it doesn't really pan out in some cases. Everyone is happy, but that doesn't exactly mean that they have the traditional sense of what love is. Still, it's one of the most consistent seasons of Girls so far, and that's worth complimenting alone.
The episode opens with Hannah and Fran separating for good. Hannah insists on paying Fran for an Uber to take his stuff to his house. When that is finished, Hannah decides to also quit her job at the school. As she finishes that, she runs into her old friend Tammy (Jenny Slate), who insists on going out for lunch. There they discuss their problematic lives and Tammy reveals her jealousy towards Hannah's life lived. Afterwards, they decide to get high at Tammy's apartment and just enjoy each other's company. As they leave, Hannah runs into Adam (Adam Driver) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke), of which she just decides to laugh it off.
Meanwhile, Shoshannna (Zosia Mamet) is back in town. She turns to Ray (Ale Karpovsky) for company. Ray is still annoyed by the Helvetica restaurant across the street and sends Shoshanna to spy on them. It goes over well until they begin asking her pretentious questions. It makes her leave and suggest to Ray and Hermie (Colin Quinn) that Ray's needs a makeover. Meanwhile, Marnie (Allison Williams) is growing frustrated with Desi's (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) new relationship and decides to make out with Ray to pass the time. Speaking as she is having dreams about him as well, this makes total sense.
Elijah (Andrew Rannels) decides to break-up with Dill (Corey Stoll). However, things don't quite work according to plan and Dill suggests that he wants a normal relationship. This makes Elijah fall for him despite having spent a lot of money on a fancy wardrobe to dump him. Among the many relationships of the episode, this is the only one that hangs together by the belief that things will work out.

It's hard to believe, but it has been almost a whole season since all of the Girls have been in the same city. With that said, it's not like any of them miss each other, especially as very few of them actually cross paths. If anything, they do so through other people. Shoshanna and Marnie both run into Ray, but that's not at the same time. Meanwhile, Hannah is having a resurgence of her old career path by getting high and discovering that maybe her life was better before. Considering how complicated her relationship to Fran has been, it does make sense that her breakdown has lead to this type of revelation. However, the choice to find that in Tammy is particularly interesting.
For those who need a refresher, Tammy hasn't been around since the first season. Considering that the show brought back Charlie a few weeks ago, it seems in keeping that there would be some turnover. It's just that Tammy is such a blink and you'll miss it character in comparison to most that you're likely not to remember her. Still, she makes the most of her return, choosing to steal bicycles and insist that Hannah's life was better as a writer. Considering that she at least seemed productive, one would think that she has a point. Otherwise, she is just the resource that Hannah needs to let out her inner frustration.
It is also great to see Shoshanna back in the states. While she made her return last week, she seemed like such a lonesome individual that it's nice to see her around old company. She also seems to have a business mindset, even if she hasn't possessed it before. Considering that Ray wanted to run for city council last year, and in all sense hasn't given it a second thought, one could likely assume that her plan isn't going to work out all that well. Still, it would be something if Shoshanna actually began to be seen as the creative business type that would make her time in Japan at least seem somewhat worthwhile.
As a whole, the story is a longing for progression of self, and most everyone has done so in some sense. Marnie has given up on Desi for good. However, she turns to her old lover Ray, which leads to a familiar path. The real question is if anything will change in everyone, or if things will be like Elijah and Dill and choose to just remain stagnant for the moment. Still, it's the illusion of love that brings everyone together, and the one thing that can be taken away from this season so far is that it's about moving on from your old life. Hannah may still have ways to go, but she seems to have her head in the right place, for now.
With the next episode being the finale, it will be interesting to see if things end on a high note, or if the season will have barely missed the mark. Still, this is a great penultimate episode that reflects why the cast works so well together, even they're rarely together. There's plenty of humor and insight that allows for the story to advance and the feeling of coherency is especially welcomed. I like when this show has some continuity week to week, and it does feel like this is the season to regale that. Whatever the cause may be, the show's penultimate season understands what it's trying to do, and it's doing it very well.
