TV Recap: Masters of Sex - "Dirty Jobs"

Left to right: Keke Palmer and Caitlin Fitzgerald
Welcome to the weekly recaps of the Showtime series Masters of Sex that follows the history of Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson's (Lizzy Caplan) actual studies of sex. Make sure to tune in every Wednesday for a dissection of the week's episode as well as thoughts of the show in general as well as potential thoughts of where things are headed. Also, please feel free to check out my recaps on Maron every Friday and Orange is the New Black every Saturday.

Plot: Libby Masters (Caitlin Fitzgerald) tries to groom the new maid Coral (Keke Palmer) on how to take care of her child. When the baby begins to love her more, she begins to get overly annoyed and begins to critique the way that she dresses. Meanwhile, Masters is attempting to get in on good terms with the new hospital while finding out that the employees are rather oafish. Virginia and Dr. DePaul (Julianne Nicholson) continue their quest on the paps smear campaign while DePaul finds out about her cancer treatment. Dr. Langham (Teddy Sears) reveals that he knows about Virginia and Masters' affair. Betty DiMello (AnnaLeigh Ashford) is saddened when she discovers that she cannot have children because her husband is impotent. Masters gets kicked out of the hospital for being too assertive. Libby yells at him after forcing Coral to do things against her will. Masters claims that he will be there for Libby as things start to go astray.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Lizzy Caplan
Right as things were getting going this season, Masters goes and changes things up. He clearly is a man of high ambitions, though at what cost? He wants professionalism, yet he doesn't entirely give credit to who deserves it. He loves Virginia, but cannot give her credit for "professional" reasons. There's all sorts of conflicting issues here that results in some confusing territory and insecurity with the character. What is he even doing anymore? Nobody is entirely sure. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see the Masters family house on the brink of yet more fights as Libby wants to take control of the situation while also realizing that there are people more qualified than her out there.
It is an episode where the supporting characters get their say. Langham wants to see his kids and makes it explicitly clear. Betty wants a family despite having an impotent lover. There are so many elements in play that the series seems to almost let loose after last week's bottle episode of impressive proportions. Will DePaul get the campaign done before her inevitable demise? There's no guaranteed promise. If nothing else, this episode is setting up an even more intriguing rest of the season.
There's a lot of dirty jobs that people have to deal with in order to even tolerate Masters and Virginia. Even Coral's unfortunate demise as she manages to be an effective employee but still not meet Libby's demands. What is there to do to please these people? All of the sex research is fine, but people aren't ready to accept it yet. Who knows what will happen. All we know is that now that Libby has once again expressed her anger at Masters, things are looking to hear up in new and interesting directions.
