Welcome to the TV Recap series on the FXX original series You're the Worst. Join me every Thursday to unravel the chaos of TV's greatest/worst romantic couple as they try to get their lives together. Will this be the week that everything works out? Who cares. As long as they don't miss Sunday Funday, everything will be fine. So get your trash juice ready and prepare to do what normal people don't do as I review the plot and other major points from throughout the season. Hope you're ready. If not, too bad. We're doing this anyways.
"You stayed."
- Gretchen (Aya Cash)
Things aren't looking great for Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash). When Gretchen refuses to move, Jimmy sends her friends in to talk to her. This is to combat Jimmy's own affair with a bartender. Meanwhile, Edgar (Desmin Borges) is getting excited about his first improv show. Lindsay (Kether Donohue) tries to patch things up with Paul (Allan McLeod) before finally deciding to move on. To her dismay, she is revealed to be pregnant. Edgar is disappointed when he discovers that Jimmy wasn't at his show. Gretchen reveals that she's miserable living with Jimmy, causing him to hide from his mistress to avoid dating her. Edgar decides that since things are too bleak at Jimmy's place, he's going to move in with Nina (Tessa Ferrer).
WVP:
Jimmy
After pretty much finding excuses the entire season, You're the Worst finally decides to let the worst part of the episode be one of its leads. We've dealt with drugs and neighbors, but now we have to see the side effects of being friends with Jimmy. Frankly, it's a rather traumatic episode if you're him. Gretchen is on her way out and Edgar is traumatized by him missing his improv show. What is there really to like about him and his socially disconnected persona? Whatever it may be, there's some silver linings because while this episode goes horribly awry because of him, the ending is so sweet and beautiful that it almost serves as its own cathartic conclusion to the season. Luckily, we have one more episode to go, so maybe Jimmy's going to grow a little bit more before we're through.
Worst Moment
It feels like things have officially hit the skids early on for Gretchen and Jimmy. As she refuses to get up, preferring to communicate through texts, Jimmy decides to berate her for improperly talking to him. While this isn't the first time that Gretchen has been depressed this season, it still feels harsh to kick someone when they're down. Following a series of friends (including Henry Rollins), the results of Jimmy's annoyance lead to things that are both helpful and not so much. While she has supportive friends, there are a few who are distracted by their own narcissism, thus not fully helping her out of her funk. It is still believed at this time that Jimmy is going to leave her (anyway) for another woman - thus making her feel even more useless.
Was This the Worst?
Ladies and gentlemen, unless the finale goes horribly wrong, you are looking at the greatest series on TV in 2015. While I have been praising the series this entire season, it does feel like the show has finally embraced a deeper humanity. Moving beyond its novelty premise of terrible people dating, it is now a show about understanding these people on an emotional level. For the most part, Gretchen has quickly become one of TV's greatest characters and Jimmy's evolution over this season has been astounding. In an even more impressive sense, this episode manages to do it all while maintaining its rich, dark humor. There's no show like it out there, and the results are beautiful. The final exchange in this episode between Gretchen and Jimmy may very well be the bittersweet thesis to why this series is so good. They're flawed and insensitive sometimes, but Jimmy and Gretchen need each other. It's beautiful and I don't see any show even coming close to this in the remaining weeks of the year.
