TV Recap: Brooklyn Nine-Nine - "The Swedes"

The Golden Globe-winning comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns for a third season of hilarity and crime. After an impressive first season that chronicled one of the best new ensembles solving problems and forming unexpected relationships, the series is back to tackle bigger things. Will it be as great as the first season? Stay tuned every Wednesday for the recap on that week's episode to find out through interesting tidbits including the best jokes and what the crew is up to that week.

Crime of the Week: There is a Swedish syndicate that is smuggling jewelry into Brooklyn.

Peralta Problem: In order to solve the crime, Peralta (Andy Samberg) must work with the help of Diaz (Melissa Fumero) as they deal with two Swedish police officers (Rikki Lindhome and Anders Holm).

Subplot of the Week: Gina (Chelsea Peretti) is afraid of failing her astronomy class and turns to her coworkers to help her learn everything in time for the big test.

Best Joke: When Jeffords (Terry Crews) reveals that he knows Neil DeGrasse Tyson, there is a flashback to a moment where they're working out. When Jeffords is baffled by how Tyson is lifting heavier weights, Tyson responds that he's doing it via physics. It's a simple, straightforward joke made better by the knowledge of Tyson's career as an expert in scientific fields.

Culprit: Peralta and Diaz find the culprits (who are in fact Swedish) smuggling jewelry in a freight truck, arresting them as they are about to check on their stash.

Resolution: Peralta discovers that he can solve cases with Diaz, despite initial concern that his lack of friendship with her would cause problems. While Gina passes her astronomy test, she ends up not needing anyone's help - finding more motivation in how much they cared about her. Meanwhile, Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) spends time with Holt (Andre Braugher) playing squash, which brings out his somewhat offensive competitive side. They win, but are banned for being destructive and annoying.

Verdict: Overall, a really strong episode with three great plots going simultaneously. I especially enjoyed the idea of teaming up Peralta and Diaz, of which doesn't happen often and usually ends up with great results. The addition of the two Swedish police officers may have been a little too much of a caricature, but it still produced a funny rivalry, considering how weird they were. Tyson gives a great cameo that may be one of the series' best, especially since he always seems game to do anything. The episode as a whole was strong reflecting what the cast does best while sticking to a very basic formula.
