Welcome to the TV Recap series on the FXX original series You're the Worst. Join me every Thursday to unravel the chaos of TV's greatest/worst romantic couple as they try to get their lives together. Will this be the week that everything works out? Who cares. As long as they don't miss Sunday Funday, everything will be fine. So get your trash juice ready and prepare to do what normal people don't do as I review the plot and other major points from throughout the season. Hope you're ready. If not, too bad. We're doing this anyways.
“Maybe I just make bad decisions! I bought
a chocolate fountain. Who does that?”
-Gretchen (Aya Cash)
Things are looking bad for Gretchen (Aya Cash). She is starting to take pills while dealing with the debacle that is Honey Nutz (Allen Maldonado) and his crew as his song with Lindsay (Kether Donohue) hits the radio. Meanwhile, Edgar (Desmin Borges) attends a party with Dorothy (Collette Wolfe) where his improv buddies get him to do reprehensible behavior. Meanwhile, Vernon (Todd Robert Anderson) becomes concerned as he pays thousands to a whore online, worrying that he's going to go broke with his wife (Janet Varney). As Jimmy (Chris Geere) becomes concerned about Gretchen's disconnection from life, he decides to date a woman that he was flirting with earlier. Things between Edgar and Dorothy work out, pledging never to be that obnoxious again. Gretchen meanwhile deals with some people that Honey Nutz threatened by pulling a gun on them. Lindsay becomes reflective on life.
WVP:
Drugs
In the series' decline into the darkness of addiction in time of depression, we see drugs have a negative impact on Gretchen's life. She has become so apathetic that she cannot even register emotion. She's hollow, unafraid of potential death. While it likely has a lot to do with depression, the drugs are more prominently on display and are more of a catalyst for everything that follows. It may be too easy to blame drugs for causing so many of the mishaps, but Gretchen is essentially one big mishap at this point. Jimmy's moving away from her, and her job as a PR assistant is not going the best way possible. She might as well carpe diem and ride it out in a numb and hazy state.
Worst Moment
It's impossible to determine where Gretchen and Honey Nutz's conflict with violent gangsters was its worst. However, there's no denying that a lot of what happened was set up by Honey Nutz himself. He's too cocky to not avoid conflict. Where his feud with his former partners is an elaborate scheme, his choice to broadcast it as a real thing only backfired. Unlike his partners, people who call in aren't aware of the safety net that Honey Nutz wants to exist in. For him to outwardly call people to come and fight him is probably worse than the fight itself. What is essentially a joke has turned into a harsh reality. The only question is where things go from here.
Was This the Worst?
If anything, it's a strong episode after last week's somewhat lackluster installment. It's also a pretty bleak set-up for the remaining two episodes. How far out of control will Gretchen go? I sense that her actions will have consequences. Meanwhile, I think that there's a lot of interesting things going on in this episode. Is Honey Nutz going to learn from his mistake? Is Jimmy going to move in on the bar tender? It feels like one half of the worst couple on TV is actually turning into the worst person, pushing people away and causing a lot of her initial charm to disappear under a melancholic blanket. I worry that the remaining episodes will be very dark and strip away the comedy entirely. This episode has plenty of it, but I don't see it being happy enough to keep up the pace. It's an interesting juxtaposition of the romantic comedy, and one that has been fruitful so far. Even if this isn't quite as good as the earlier episodes, it's still full of some of the better drama on TV. Funny, since it isn't even a drama.
