TV Recap: You're the Worst - "Crevasses"

Left to right: Chris Gere and Aya Cash
Welcome to the TV Recap series on the FXX original series You're the Worst. Join me every Thursday to unravel the chaos of TV's greatest/worst romantic couple as they try to get their lives together. Will this be the week that everything works out? Who cares. As long as they don't miss Sunday Funday, everything will be fine. So get your trash juice ready and prepare to do what normal people don't do as I review the plot and other major points from throughout the season. Hope you're ready. If not, too bad. We're doing this anyways.

“I’m just gonna leave you with
this checklist for college freshmen.”

Realizing that Gretchen (Aya Cash) doesn't have any supplies, she joins Lindsay (Kether Donohue) on a trip to the mall. Meanwhile, Jimmy (Chris Geere) is desperately trying to come up with a new novel, confiding in a security guard (Steve Agee) for ideas. Edgar (Desmin Borges) watches sports and begins to worry that Lindsay is just using him so she could get wings. When she realizes this, she tries to seduce Edgar at her home in lingerie, still with sauce on her face. Gretchen freaks out while buying supplies for herself. The security guard quits his job, convinced that his new venture with Jimmy will pay off - when it was all just hypothetical. Jimmy and Gretch work on living together.

WVP:
Buying stuff

If there's one through line in this episode, it is the need to buy stuff. For Gretchen, it is being able to claim that she actually owns stuff at Jimmy's apartment. After all, losing her entire living to a fire caused by a vibrator is pretty traumatic. Even if she isn't that successful with it, she makes the most of it eventually. Meanwhile, Lindsay uses Edgar to get some free wings. It isn't entirely clear why she is forcing him to flirt with me, but it is getting her some satisfaction that allows her to eat more and more. If there's one problem here, it's that nobody wants to buy anything. Even the security guard refuses to buy his own lunch. Not the strongest platform for a mall, if you ask me.

Worst Moment

Even if Lindsay doesn't like sports, she'll tag along with Edgar for those sweet, sweet wings. It's her whole existence at this point. However, things quickly turn awkward when she sends Edgar to flirt with a man for her. He is her "wing man" as it were, adding layers to the actual meaning. However, the rejection immediately becomes confusing when Edgar discovers that the man isn't interested in Lindsay. In fact, he is gay. However, the thought that the man wouldn't be interested in Edgar either immediately sends him into an existential crisis as an increasingly messy Lindsay watches for the sidelines.

Was This the Worst?

Compared to last week, it wasn't. In fact, this may be one of the sweetest episodes out there. While last week was about trying to avoid becoming normals, this is a fall into the trap. Gretchen and Jimmy accept each other and are working towards a better relationship. Meanwhile, it is the downward spiral of Lindsay that will make for a far more interesting story. With a messy face for most of the episode, she carries the laughs while Gretchen loses her mind at the store. As a whole, a very strong episode thanks to character growth and the ingenious plots that evolved as the four spend the day at the mall. Everyone gets some catharsis, but maybe not where they were expecting. While not as immediately funny, it's probably sweeter and more endearing.
