"Oh no! This wasn't the immediate
praise that I was expecting."
- BoJack Horseman (Will Arnett)
Plot:
BoJack Horseman shirks his duties and goes to New Mexico. While there, he runs into Charlotte (Olivia Wilde) and her family. He decides to go with her daughter Penny (Ilana Glazer) to prom. When he becomes embarrassed that he isn't the center of attention, they ditch prom and go out drinking. When things go horribly wrong and part of the team lands in the hospital, he calls the night short. When Penny tries to have sex with him, he refuses. Because he told everyone that he was buying a boat, he buys one. When Charlotte does discover him about to sleep with Penny, she kicks him out. His desperate plea to be accepted is denied. He rides back on a truck hauling his boat where he finds his house in shambles and Diane Nguyen (Allison Brie) still a wreck months later.

Flashback
While momentary, there's a glimpse into BoJack and Charlotte's past. As they ditch prom, they decide to go out into the desert. Once there, they attach glow sticks to balloons and release them into the air, creating an ominous beauty. Not to be outdone, they climb on top of the water tower and watch as they float through the air. They talk about their personal lives and their optimism for the future ahead.
Secondary Character MVP:
Penny (Ilana Glazer)
While Charlotte was the reason for everything, it is Penny who ends up being the bigger focus for BoJack. He finds something wonderful in her that he desperately wants. She is youthful and willing to go along with his negligent shenanigans. She wants to have a great time, much like him. While things sort of go out of control, she is mostly in charge of the situations. It isn't until the end in which BoJack shows his truly negligent ways and decides to sleep with her that proves just how innocent and naive she is in all of this. She embodies something that BoJack wants but will never have, which makes it all the more tragic.
Best Joke
When BoJack meets all of Penny's friends, he has the honor of meeting one of the more novelty characters of the show: Pete Repeat (Jermaine Fowler). He claims that he says everything twice and that it is his defining feature. However, as the remainder of the episode will suggest, he isn't actually committed to the shtick and finds himself unable to repeat almost anything. Which really raises the question on if he was in fact someone who repeated everything twice.
Overall Thoughts
If last week focused on Diane's lowest point, then this episode may as well be BoJack's lowest. Not only does he try and hang out with teenagers and get them drunk without taking responsibility, but he tries to have sex with Penny and sabotages years of good thoughts with Charlotte. He is a total mess and it makes the comedy all the more cringe worthy as he goes through this pseudo-sitcom take of Charlotte's life. Her family is crass, but is mostly a deranged look at a man who is trying to relive youth and not doing it all that successful. For what it's worth, it is an effectively jarring episode that shows just how little BoJack has changed for the better this season despite starting off rather strong. It is both creepy and funny how this show has evolved over time.
