Life Lessons From Maron: "Patent Troll"

Welcome to the return of the recap series on the IFC series Maron in which comedian/podcaster Marc Maron lives life and tries to learn how to be a better person. To pay homage to the series, these recaps will be released on Saturdays and chronicle the various life lessons that are presented in the 30 minute format on a weekly basis as well as a meter that determines just how angry our protagonist seems to be. Join us as we tackle the psyche of the popular angry man and pray that he doesn't lose it entirely.

Plot: Marc faces conflict when he discovers that he is being sued by a patent troll.

A Line That Sums Up the Episode: "The podcast is what I am."

Guests Review: With the patent trolls running amok, Marc assembles a team of his friends to determine how they should go about their strategy. Leading the pack is Sam Seder, who is still petty with Marc after incidents regarding Air America. He is annoyed but supportive of his work. Along with Seder is Dave Anthony returning as the weird friend who has a podcast that nobody knows about. There's also Jackie Kashian and a few other cameos that make for an entertaining look into the fight between artist and con.

Anger Meter: 8 (out of 10)
It is quite a frustrating week for Marc. For starters, he is being sued to a degree that could see his home being taken from him. He also has the aggravating Sam Seder constantly nagging at him, thinking that he knows better despite not having as much success. Together, it creates a storm of frustration for the comedian and leaves plenty of questions as to what will happen next. I'm sure that this isn't the last that we see from the patent trolls on Maron.

We Good?: While the show has always been very personal to the real life Maron, this feels like a bounce back to really good. For those that follow his show, the story of patent trolls is a familiar one. He has had to deal with them nonstop. By having Sam Seder stop by to be an annoying friend, the show manages to find the comedy in the tension and produces a rather strong episode that pits Maron as an underdog who isn't just frustrated with the world. He has his rogue team of podcasters on his side, and I am hoping that there's more to this story, as it ends more on a cliffhanger than an actual resolution.
