Life Lessons From Maron: "Anti-Depressed"

Marc Maron
Welcome to the return of the recap series on the IFC series Maron in which comedian/podcaster Marc Maron lives life and tries to learn how to be a better person. To pay homage to the series, these recaps will be released on Saturdays and chronicle the various life lessons that are presented in the 30 minute format on a weekly basis as well as a meter that determines just how angry our protagonist seems to be. Join us as we tackle the psyche of the popular angry man and pray that he doesn't lose it entirely.

Plot: Marc discovers that he has anxiety and decides to do something about it.

A Line That Sums Up the Episode: "What's the big theory that will make me okay?"

Patton Oswalt
Guests Review: Patton Oswalt stops by to promote his actual book about seeing movies. Andy Kindler stops by to help Marc through his journey through anxiety. He gives good advice as the medication begins to effect his head. Making an appearance as a dead friend is Eddie Pepitone, who decides that going with the chains look is classic. He gives bad advice and throws Marc into even more of a confusing fit.

Anger Meter: 2 (out of 10)
How exactly do you handle anxiety? The whole point of the episode is to rid yourself of anything that would make you angered or stressed. In a sense, this low rating is actually somewhat of a compliment. He is the calmest that he has ever been, and it creates a lot of weird situations and behaviors that we haven't seen before in Marc. It's funny to see him try to be normal, and it isn't quite that normal-looking anyways. So, be glad that we have the angry Marc to fall back on.

Left to right: Eddie Pepitone and Maron
We Good?: While it isn't one of the best episodes of the season or the weirdest, it's another solid episode that shows what Maron is good at doing. By taking the anger out of Marc, we get to see him struggle to be a decent person. The results aren't pleasant. He pees on a ghost and has bizarre hand gestures. It is funny in the way that he comments on the side effects of medication. Otherwise, it is an odd experience and one that has enough laughs, but no real strong catharsis. It is good, but only in that it is that off Maron episode where we see a different, less interesting, side of him.

Rating: 3 out of 5
