Welcome to the weekly column Trailing Off in which I take a look at a trailer from the past week and analyze its potential. This will be done using an obnoxious amount of analyzing and personal thoughts on the cast and crew as well as expectations. Coming every Sunday (it's called Trailing Off for a reason), I will attempt to highlight films ranging from new blockbusters to lesser known indies and give them their due. Partially to spread awareness, I do believe that there is an art to the sell and will do my best to highlight why these trailers matter or don't with approval (trove) or disapproval (trash). So please stop by, recommend some trailers, and I will see you next time.

- Preamble -
I want to personally apologize for taking last week off without notice. It was unprofessional and largely due to very poor timing on my part. I am back now and hope to be more diligent in the future. However, this week was a pretty hard one to choose from largely because there isn't much that I cared about this week. Where at worst, most of the trailers I choose at least have some semblance of curiosity, this week is met with a resounding cry to figure out which one is the more interesting of ones that I don't care about at all. That is my outlook going in this week, so I hope that the trailers deliver something of value here to make it not just my poor disposition on display this week.
So, why did I choose Masterminds? For starters, it is one of a select few that came out. Also, the cast is pretty good from the looks of it. While I am not an adamant Kristen Wiig fan, I do find myself generally enjoying her work enough when that is the case. I haven't followed her dramatic career too closely, but she remains a compelling comedic figure, so that's probably my highest point of enthusiasm going in right now. I don't really know what else to expect other than that maybe this is just another Spy movie that I don't care about. I really don't know what this is about.
I would like to say that the name Jared Hess means something to me. While I do like Napoleon Dynamite, it does have its unfortunate dated nature on its sleeve. I feel that it is an adequate film that looks pretty good, but I don't know if Hess is necessarily a voice of long term promise for me. He hasn't done anything else that has made me feel desire to go out of my way and see it. I don't know if that's my ignorance or his, but I feel that it's been 10 years and I still don't have any idea of what's going on with him. At least he's doing better than Jon Heder, I presume.
So, let's get this trailer underway. I recognize that I am not exactly going in with the best of mindsets, but I figured that not every week can be a masterpiece. So, without further ado, let us explore this film with a rather decent cast and a director who kind of makes good movies. I don't know that this is going to be a great week, but let's just roll with it, shall we?

- Dissection -
From that opening moment in which Zach Galifianakis began laughing, I had one thought. I tried to let it subside and focus on the rest of the trailer, but it only grew. As the gags piled on and the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels-esque plot unfolded, I felt myself biting my tongue. Then the AC/DC song came on and I felt the generic vibe starting to grow. This is an overproduced trailer with a good cast and a bunch of really lowbrow jokes. I am not entirely what I was supposed to find endearing about this trailer, but it wasn't really that good. I felt myself regretting the decision to actually review it. Yet, I've gotten myself in too deep to not talk about it a little bit.
Yet here is my only thought coming out of it: I can't do this.
- One Sentence Sell -
Kristen Wiig and Zach Galifianakis star in a heist movie that is full of ribald and off-the-wall humor.
- Trash or Trove -
TRASH
Sorry, it just wasn't a good week for movie trailers. Here's hoping for something better next week. This movie looks really bad and I don't feel like dedicating that much more to it.
