Inventory: November 2014

Welcome to Inventory: a monthly column in which we take a moment to look back at the past few weeks and highlight articles that I have written that may be worth a second glance. From the archives of Optigrab, The Oscar Buzz, and CinemaBeach, the following is what I feel to be the Top 10 articles that I have written in any given month and feel the need to highlight. Also covered will be any known details on what will be coming up in the month ahead. So without further ado, let's take inventory and see what I have to say.

Comments: Christopher Nolan returned to theaters this month with the expansive, highly ambitions new film Interstellar that challenged what space could look like. The unfortunate side effect is that there's a few too many problems in the final stretch to make me entirely care for the film.

Frances McDormand

Comments: Barely fitting in during the last stretch of 2014 is this great HBO miniseries called Olive Kitteridge that featured a great performance by Frances McDormand over the course of four hours. It may not seem like an extraordinary story, but the four stories that constitute this series makes for a fascinating character portrait.

Jennifer Lawrence

Comments: For better or worse, I have been a fan of The Hunger Games, though I haven't quite found the movies to live up to my expectations of what they could be. In this particular case, the potential is finally met in a very impressive and powerful way.

Dustin Hoffman

Comments: This past month saw the passing of one of the great American film directors and overall impressive artist. He is one of the rare EGOT who changed the world through cinema and stage with works such as The Graduate and Angels in America.

Comments: One of my great challenges over the past few years has been to watch all of the Best Picture winners. Now that I have, I am reporting back on the trends and interesting things I have noticed from 86 years of winners.

John Oliver

Comments: In case you have missed HBO's latest news show, you missed a pretty great example of how a rant can be used to not only entertain but change the world. John Oliver is a ridiculously talented comedian and the writing on this show is enviably better than almost everything else out there.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Comments: Does anyone know that World War I is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, because cinema doesn't. This is a piece exploring why this is kind of irksome and makes me wish for a change.

Eddie Redmayne

Comments: While the film seemed unnecessary from the outside, my opinion quickly changed once I saw the film and its phenomenal depiction of Stephen Hawking. If I didn't believe that Eddie Redmayne was a great actor, I sure do now.

Comments: For the most part, Interstellar has a lot of great moments in which Christopher Nolan outdoes himself. However, he also stumbles in ways that he hasn't quite done before.

Jake Gyllenhaal

Comments: Every now and then a film comes along that comments on journalism in exciting and fresh ways. This is one that for the most part succeeds in entertaining as well as reflecting what's wrong with the medium.
