Welcome to TV Recap, in which we look at modern shows and analyze them on an episode-to-episode basis. This one focuses on the cartoon sitcom Bob's Burgers, a very funny show that is capable of rivaling old school Simpsons in terms of irreverent humor and off the wall zaniness. With a cast of modern alternative comedian heroes, the story follows the Belchers as they run a burger joint. Join me as I take part in dissecting the show in its first full season. Check back on Tuesdays for the next exciting installment.
Once again, we come to the end of another Bobs Burgers season. In the penultimate episode, the show reaches a new level of audacity by choosing to revamp the entire show, if just potentially. For four seasons now, the wharf has been a wonderful grounds for the characters to get lost and run amok. While it is doubtful that the wharf is really going to shut down, the series has run a steady course and would be interesting to see things mix up, if just a little bit for their upcoming season. With that said, the series mixes things up and ends up with a very strong, promising beginning to the two part finale.
The episode opens with the Belcher kids going down to the wharf to hand out flyers. During their visit, they run into Mr. Fischoeder (Kevin Kline), who is handing out flyers for a new refurbished amusement park, including the Scream-I-Cane. Meanwhile, Felix (Zach Galifianakis) is wanting to sell the town and turn it into condos which would mean tearing down the wharf. This results in some conflicts as Bob (Jon Benjamin) contemplates whether this is a great idea or not.
Meanwhile, Tina (Dan Mintz) sees destruction happening down at the wharf to her beloved merry-go-round. She decides to protest by having Louise (Kristen Schaal) lock her neck into her favorite horse. This gets the media's attention and soon Bob and Linda (John Roberts) make it down to see what all the hubbub is about. In a brief yet not inconspicuous conversation, they reveal Felix's plan to see the wharf and build condos. This gets Mr. Fischoeder to consider the proposition as well. However, Felix is also doing it for Fanny (Jordan Peele), a stripper that he kind of likes.
Bob takes Linda, Mr. Fischoeder, and Fanny to the island to try and get Mr. Fischoeder to stay out of the negotiation's way. While Fanny and Linda are out having fun, Bob sings his land owner a song in hopes that he will reconsider and allow him to build another Bob's Burgers on the docks. When all is said and done, it doesn't happen, which causes some conflict. Upon returning, they have another negotiation on the Scream-I-Cane and end up agreeing. This gets Felix mad, who is keeping them hostage with a gun.
Rating: 4 out of 5
And with that, the fourth season has hooked us in for what is sure to be a gripping finale. Along with a musical number, this series has attempted to add a level of suspense that is simply intriguing. I don't want to make too many comments without the full picture, but I like the idea that the series moved beyond jokes and gave itself a little narrative. It adds weight and makes me wonder what is going to happen. Why is Felix such a tool? Is the show about to go really dark for the finale? There's a lot of potential peril that is to come up, and it is something that I don't we really have gotten from Bob's Burgers before. I look forward to recapping the two part episode as a whole next week, in which I will share my thoughts more clearly on this episode.
