Parts of Rec: "Ann's Decision"

Rashida Jones
Welcome to Parts of Rec, a new column that will attempt to take the weekly brilliance of NBC show Parks and Recreation and cut it into the bare essentials. After all, time is precious and sometimes you cannot read pages and pages of reviews. While it will be impossible to bottle all of the highlights, I will do my best to cover the plot, as well as memorable moments and just what makes it great in general. Make sure to look for Parts of Rec every Friday following the episode.

Season 5, Episode 12
"Ann's Decision"

Left to right: Rob Lowe and Nick Offerman
"There's been a mistake. You have given me the food that my food eats."
-Ron (Nick Offerman)

After the events of the previous episode, Ann (Rashida Jones) is on a quest to have a child. Seeking guidance from Leslie (Amy Poehler), she visits sperm banks and even asks men that she thinks is perfect. Leslie is doing her best to keep her from making the wrong decision. Meanwhile, Chris (Rob Lowe), Ron (Nick Offerman), Tom (Aziz Ansari) and Ben (Adam Scott) are busy looking at food to be catered at Ben and Leslie's wedding. What starts off nice quickly turns into disaster as everyone but Tom, who just took pictures for Instagram of the food, got sick. Meanwhile, April (Aubrey Plaza) and Andy (Chris Pratt) take over duties of holding town meetings that quickly spiral out of control, with some unruly people (Harris Wittels) demanding that it be a topless park. Ann eventually settles on one man: the Douche (Nick Kroll), who is a very juvenile DJ. Leslie goes on his show to ask him to not go through with it. She ends up covered in Jello. The guys end up continuing their quest for the perfect catering after a few days of vomiting. April manages to control the meetings after using her anti-social skills. Ann reconsiders having a child after Leslie talks with her and gives her a binder with an animated uterus on the cover.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Left to right: Amy Poehler and Anne Moody
MVP: Leslie (Amy Poehler)
The lengths that Leslie goes to in this episode are endearing and a great reminder of the Ann/Leslie friendship. Her desire for Ann to have the right father turns into a self-sacrificing quest of taking down her foes, including the Douche, who is rightfully annoying. Still, after a few episodes of seeing Ann try and help Leslie for her bachelorette party, it is nice to see the tables turned. Also, Leslie just deserves points for managing to solve everything just by falling over into a pool of jello, which may be one of the ultimate signs of friendship.

Left to right: Chris Pratt and Aubrey Plaza
Best scene: Easily the way that April tries to camouflage herself as Leslie is quite intriguing. It is also great to see how heinous the first park meeting gets when the simple butting in of a pervert turns the whole town into a desire to make the first topless park. The way that the chaos builds and April has nothing really constructive to say only reflects how ridiculous the situation is. However, it is in the second city hall meeting where April shuts down the pervert's desire to build a topless park and prove once and for all that she doesn't need to be like Leslie to be in control.
