The following is the list of movies that I am curious to check in May. There are not that many, but it's mostly because there isn't too much to choose from. The blockbuster season starts off in June, and we're only getting pre-buzz right now. So here are the films that I am going to check out.
The Avengers
I'll be honest that I do not care for comic book movies all that much. In fact, I wasn't even wild about the ones that were churned out last year by Marvel. They were entertaining, but it felt personally like this was all building up to a hype that the final product would deliver on even with...
Robert Downey Jr., an actor who I consider to be one of the ultimate bad-asses of our time. However, probably due to my distaste for comic book movies, I wasn't wild about his job in the Iron Man films. They were entertaining, but it was mostly because I was really into his persona. I am only hoping that he can bring it together with his charm.
Chris Evans, who was a decent Captain America, but I'm mostly excited because he was so great in Scott Pilgrim, and has me riding off of that energy ever since. I mean, let's take a look.
Great, right? Imagine if he actually brings that energy to the Avengers. I doubt he'll be hitting people with skateboards, though. Because Jeremy Renner got shafted to brief moments in Thor. He's also just really cool and deserves more screen time.
And because Samuel L. Jackson is just awesome in most of what he does. I'd like to imagine he gets more to do than just say catchy lines, but you know what, I don't care because it's directed by...
Joss Whedon, who recently made an awesome little movie called...
Next up on my list is Dark Shadows. I am embarrassed to admit to wanting to see this notably because the last movie these people did together was...
A film that may have made a billion dollars, but didn't deserve it. It also holds the title of misusing Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska. Seriously, that movie sucked. However, what gives me hope is that this looks funny. Funny how?
I'll admit that it looks funny in that trashy, campy way that Tim Burton has come to be defined as. But at least it looks like they're having fun, like in...
Ed Wood. Admittedly, those days are long behind them, but there is some interesting supporting cast, including...
And...
Eva Green. As well as one of my favorite young actresses...
Chloe Moretz. She may not make the best movies every time, but she is definitely making a lot of good choices. I'd like to imagine that this is the reason that I'll one day rent this from Redbox. That is, unless we can believe that Tim Burton still has some quality juices left in him.
Next up is Hick, which I'm only seeing because of...
Chloe Moretz. It'll be on my Netflix queue eventually.
Onto non-Chloe Moretz movies. Next up is the Dictator. I am ashamed to admit it, but I am a sucker for Sacha Baron Cohen. Ever since his early days on Da Ali G Show, he has made me laugh with his bold, slap stick version on political commentary. Then this movie came along and swept the nation.
That's right. Borat. While I found it to be funny for many reasons, including
I still think that of his Ali G characters, this one was the best.
I'll admit that Bruno was more obnoxious and in your face, but I felt that it was bolder and had more fun with the subject matter. I also enjoy it because you'd never guess that this guy
Is the barber from Sweeney Todd. With his latest movie the Dictator, he's moving away from his sketch characters and attempting to make a new one. I will admit that early trailers didn't sell me, but the newer ones have. It's ridiculous and boneheaded in the ambitiously political way that I kind of like. I mean, I doubt anyone will ever see him as more than Borat, but this just makes me laugh a lot.
So maybe that is why I'm totally on board. Also, the supporting cast is pretty interesting. It even has...
Anna Faris, who has known to be funny from time to time, and from what little I have seen from her, this looks like a good one. At least I hope so. It's been awhile since...
Then there's the return of...
Wes Anderson with his latest opus
Which has produced some great trailers, but should also grab your attention because it features the likes of Edward Norton and...
Bruce Willis
Jason Schwartzman, who was really awesome in
Bored to Death, which ran on HBO. Rounding out the awesome cast includes
Along with Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand. It may sound like a Coen Brothers movie, but fret not. It looks like Wes Anderson made a retro Wes Anderson film with a really solid cast. I cannot wait to see what becomes of it.
Finally, there's this...
Now let me tell you that I have seen the footage, and it's not pretty. It looks like a cash grab for sure. What's with the time travelling and all the other nonsense? I mean, I really liked the first one. Who can forget...
If one movie in the sci-fi genre defined my childhood, it wasn't Ghostbusters or Star Wars, it was Men in Black, which amazed me as a kid and still does as I get older. The sequel is more problematic with stuff like...
Though it still has likable merits, it doesn't hold up. With that said, who is really calling for another movie after a lackluster second one that is at least 10 years old? Maybe the guy who thought this was a good idea.
I am avoiding the movie if just so I don't have to listen to a goddamn Pitbull song. I mean, this has become a tradition of Will Smith singing theme songs to his movies. "Nod Ya Head" wasn't as great as the original, but at least it was Will Smith. Whoever made this the theme song deserves to be sacked. It reflect the biggest reason I have going against this movie. However, I still am a sucker to eventually seeing it because of that first movie...
Because you know what? I love the Noisy Cricket and all of the gimmicks that they came up with for that movie, or the comic. Also, they had a great cartoon that was on when I was a kid. It looked like this.
Which I guess will be the last cool thing that movie made.
