For many, the summer continues another week or two. For me and other community college students, today is the last week of having no class. We now have to reach into our savings, pay for classes and text books, and listen to the teachers ramble their normal ramblings.
But, it was a good summer this year, yes? Plenty of fun stuff happened that made the Real Cancun pale in comparison.
We went to movies, concerts, and spent an awful lot of time on /Film trying to find something interesting to talk about. Luckily, Page 2 helped out a LOT with that. We created fads and now have a new question to ask ourselves: Why cookie rocket?
Yes, this summer had plenty to remember. I decided to compile the mainstream things that will stick with me (anyways) as I get older and gain acute Alzheimer from studying too hard. To save you all from the bore of my awesome karaoke nights, I will not mention anything involving me that doesn't relate to the general public.
And now... here are 26.5 things to remember about summer 2011:

Infomania and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
For me, there was nothing sadder than seeing a show that I have professed love for come to an end. True, I've only been in love with the show for a year and a half, but when it comes to overall influence, Infomania may be the one thing that inspired me to be a satirist of the pop culture landscape. I couldn't wait every week to listen to Brett Erlich, Ben Hoffman, Erin Gibson (check out her Twitter, too), Sergio Cilli, and Bryan Saffi just tear apart the news. And then, it came to an end.
I've watched the finale three times at least, and by the closing song, I am already getting depressed. Luckily, this summer, I have managed to become friends with Cilli, Saffi, and Gibson's personal Facebook accounts. I pretty much giggle from sheer delight when I manage to hear something that seems unscripted.
Luckily, I've also managed to hear them on other podcasts, notably: Brett Erlich on Girl on Guy, Erin Gibson on the Dork Forest and Totally Laime (latter I'd recommend), and Bryan Saffi on the Dork Forest and How Was Your Week. Erlich also did a thing called Moose Toilet, but we're trying to focus on the positive right now.
Since, I've cuddled up to watch reruns on youtube and just laugh at what essentially has been one of the bigger inspirations in my life. To know it's over is kind of sad, but to know that these guys are still working makes me a little more hopeful.

Bob Newhart in Horrible Bosses
Easily the funniest movie of the summer (Attack the Block was better, but we'll get to that later) had me in hysterics as I finally saw my dream of Charlie Day making a legitimate transformation into movies and succeeding alongside Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and my favorite boss: Colin Farrell. As an obsessive fan of comedy, it met all of my marks.
However, the real highlight came at the end when there was a cameo by Bob Newhart. Now, let that sink in... this isn't Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, this is legitimately a solid comedy that already earned it's laughs, and to throw Newhart in at the last moment made it all that much better. As someone who has idolized Newhart (down to this classic routine), it was nice to see him still around and making great work.
Also, in a little over a month, Horrible Bosses has maintained it's position in the Top 10 and currently has $108 million, which makes me very proud.

Louie - Country Drive
I have been a fan of this show since the first episode. Why? Just because I am a fan of Louis. C.K. the stand-up artist. However, it wasn't until this episode that I officially declared my love for the show. This was THE episode where suddenly it went from a show I liked to one I loved.
It may not be the best episode this series has produced, but when you start with a car trip with the dad from hell singing the Who's "Who Are You" and the second act is visiting a racist grandma who dies in the kitchen, I am already on the edge of my seat, waiting for the third act, which ties in nicely with a stand up routine on the racism of the Huck Finn character.
To me, that's a master craftsman who knows what he's doing. Usually, you can fumble over this small detail, but by doing it right, he managed to convince me that the reason I will love this show is because you won't know the next move and be pleasantly surprised. That is why it's now my second favorite show on TV behind Bored to Death.

Hugo Trailer
Hugo Trailer
I'm just calling it now. This is my favorite trailer released this summer. It helps that I am partial to Martin Scorsese and will see anything you stamp his name on. Add that this looks like a great, colorful movie with whimsy makes me love it more. Drop the 3D tag at the end and you got a deal. It also doesn't hurt that I love Chloe Moretz and think Sacha Baron Cohen looks like he's back into physical comedy form with this. Damn, I just love it.

Amy Winehouse dies at 27
July 23, 2011
The death that no one saw coming. I was one of those optimistic ones who believed that she had the potential to return anytime she wanted with an album that was far grander than "Back to Black." It would polish her reputation as one of the honest talents in the music industry and possibly make us remember her as the musician she is instead of the tragic mess of breakdowns and drugs that she became associated with. I can only now think of what would have happened if she even had one more album to prove herself. Would it possibly top this gem?

The Bop Decameron set photos
You know those moments when you feel that Jesse Eisenberg has stolen your women? How about when you discover that Woody Allen is only a few inches taller than Ellen Page (and that's in heels)? That's what the set photos I saw this summer of the Bop Decameron answered for me. As excited as I am to see Page and Allen working together, I cannot help but feel Eisenberg is setting out to steal my women.

If any movie lived up to the hype this summer, it was director Joe Cornish's Attack the Block. Not only did it have perhaps my favorite score of the summer (by Basement Jaxx), but it also featured some of the most exhilarating, low budget, British slang whipping youths I've seen in awhile kicking ass against aliens. It's quick, it's fast, and curse your soul if you don't find something to enjoy from this movie. It's a memorable time that I can only hope becomes one of those iconic movies that I feel surpasses majority of this summer's entertainment.

Futurama - Mobius Dick
I am not sure if any of you were around me last year, but one of my biggest concerns was that Futurama was not quite on par with the original group of episodes. I was worried that it would fall into that category of Never Should Have Been Renewed (imagine how much more people would've cared for Family Guy had it not lead to it's recent track record).
Something strange happened this summer. A few episodes into the recent batch, I began to feel that we were finally back in shape. I was always optimistic that it would get there, but to actually see episodes that could be placed alongside season 3 or 4 was amazing, especially for me, a fan who can cop to marathoning a season on a Saturday out of boredom.
And this episode may be the best of them. I am only optimistic that it will continue to thrive and get me one step closer to a proper conversation with Phil LaMarr one day.

Re-Rise of the Planet of the Apes Broadway song from the Simpsons
Re-Rise of the Planet of the Apes Broadway song from the Simpsons
I doubt in ten years we'll remember director Rupert Wyatt's prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but one thing's for sure, I'm going to be looking forward to ALL Planet of the Apes movies from now on if they manage to feature this. No, the movie didn't actually cop to it, but every review I've listened to on podcast (Extra Hot Great, /Filmcast, Operation Kino) has used this song in some way.
As a devout Simpsons fan, I love hearing it every time, though it also makes me laugh that they don't use the film's score or anything else from the series. However, I am still excited to sing along from Chimpan-A to Chimpanzee.

Rotten Tomatoes' Marvel Movie Madness
Rotten Tomatoes' Marvel Movie Madness
Okay, so this actually started in May and ended before August really took off, but one of my favorite things to do is read continuing series on movies. This was the one I loved this summer. True, it was all about superhero movies that I hadn't seen, but listening to people talk smack on Elektra was enough of a thrill for me. I enjoyed reading the comments and just hearing how certain movies have stood the test of time and discovering forgotten pieces of crap. Kudos on a great series. If you feel like reading it, I recommend it, even though it was way more fun to do it as it was going on.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
If this summer had a universal theme for everyone, it was the end of a ten year blockbuster series of movies belonging to Harry Potter. Now, being a fan of the books, I traditionally stated that I didn't like the movies. However, watching this one, I felt the exhilaration that was missing from all of the other ones. It felt like there was finally some closure and activity happening. Plenty of awkward kissing, a wet Hermione Granger, and a tear jerking scene that was great, but made us question what qualifies a performance for an Oscar.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and it was a fitting end to the series. I probably will miss it, as will majority of people who have been alive for the past 13 years. But don't lose hope, Pottermore is on it's way. I'm sure you'll get a kick out of that.

Doug Loves Movies - Adam Scott, Bill Simmons, Jon Hamm
Two times in my life I have been in the same room as Jon Hamm. I know I wasn't going to delve into personal business, but I did go to this particular taping of Doug Loves Movies with Andrew, Matt, and Benson. Being a longtime fan, I was excited to attend it. To have Adam Scott be one of the guests was also amazing, being a longtime Party Down (what is longtime with a two season show?) fan. My only regret was not catching him to shake his hand afterwards.
However, I improved my distance from Hamm by a substantial amount this time. Two seats over, he approached Benson a few times and eventually took his sandwich. For me, the most memorable part of this evening was watching the man who I had known as clean shaven Don Draper reach over and in a very bad lighting, look like a maniacal hobo (with above beard) wanting to steal Benson's sandwich.
Was an amazing evening, and if you want to hear my voice, I shout "Yeah" during the Parks and Recreation shout out (not seen, Adam Scott looking confused at me).

Ryan Reynolds gets major Razzies Cred
It's not easy being Ryan Reynolds this summer. While I have nothing against the swarthy, charming guy, he definitely made a lot of crappy movies this summer. Okay, he only made two, but when the Green Lantern is considered the one superhero movie that failed this summer and the Change-Up was more uninspired, it leaves Reynolds with a bad resume.
Do know I am not picking on him because I hate him. In fact, I like the guy. Buried was a solid movie, and a lot of the romantic comedies he's done (and Adventureland, a classic) are above average. It's just not his year, and sadly with poor scripts and not much to work with, I believe that this may be resulting in some serious Razzies nomination for acting. I wouldn't doubt it.
I can only hope he fairs better next year.

"Nerd Do Well" by Simon Pegg
An ode to growing up in love with geek culture. While the book features a lot of interesting tidbits about his life, I didn't find Pegg's book to be overall satisfying. It does feature enough to make me have fond thoughts of it, but not enough to recommend it. It's kind of sad, because I love the guy. What would've made it better? If he didn't intersplice the chapters with his own sci-fi fiction that made no sense.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US) Promotional Extravaganza!

As a fan of the Swedish films (and previous belief no one could top Noomi Rapace's portrayal) and David Fincher films, this has been quite a summer. I've gotten my first peek at the trailer, the score, and even the poster (above). Having just finished the first book, I am already more excited to see if Fincher can surpass the Swedish version and make it dark and brutal without being too vulgar and repelling. Either way, I've seen enough this summer to make me want to get to December already.

Weeds - Game-Played
After I praised last season as being one of the best shows on television, it returns, many years on, with a plot that I feel sadly isn't going anywhere. In truth, I held out optimism for the first few episodes, but by episode three, I felt like this may not be the season to jump in on. True, Nancy is fighting for her child's custody and getting out of a halfway house, but there's little drive to make any of it seem interesting. I will stick with this show through good and bad, but sadly, I don't think this season is going to be memorable at all, even with the very few twists that have given me some hope.

United States of Tara - The Good Parts

As a fan of the show, I had mixed opinions on it's cancellation. Eventually, I came to accept it and I considered it's three season run to be very well deserved with the typical highs and lows of any show. I'm sure I'll revisit it with some fondness, especially as I feel that it went off with an appropriate finale, featuring the best use of a Supertramp song I've heard since the days before Gym Class Heroes ruined their music.
I don't know that it was the best show ever, but it's definitely one that I will be able to convince people to watch a few episodes and be able to tolerate being in the same room. In truth, I am a Diablo Cody defender (with exception to recent Evil Dead news) and this is definitely a nice addition to her resume.
With a great cast and some snappy, fun dialog, I'm going to miss this show. It sure was fun.

The Dark Knight Rises Promotional Extravaganza!
The other big movie to get big press was also not a Comic Con. It was the Dark Knight Rises, which essentially has one hell of a cast to make you understand plausibly how director Christopher Nolan will follow up the Dark Knight with something bigger and grander.
Of all the discoveries: the trailer, the Bane pictures, and poster, the image of Anne Hathaway (above) is my favorite, if just because it was what I was most looking forward to. This is going to be one hell of a movie, and the build up is looking to make the finale just that more fun.

Katy Perry - "Last Friday Night"
Joan Jett once said "I hate myself for loving you." Well, now she must want to kill herself, because my weird infatuation with this song is a problem. Katy Perry, on a quest to make The Summer Song every year now, is still bone headed and lacks the depth, but dammit, her careless attention to detail sends me into OCD of laughing at her terribly safe choices of breaking laws and trying to be cool while seeming like a loser. Damn, this song is the oxymoron song of the summer for me, and I cannot help that I've listened to it quite a bit. So you know what, my soul has been sucked, you are free to leave anytime you want.

Marc Maron - "This Has to Be Funny"
As you know, I listen to WTF with Marc Maron with so much regularity that I almost consider him a religious figure. Love the guy. Then, I checked out this CD and it's a good summation of why I love him. His rants on dating, cats, and texting while driving may be bleak, but they have some honest, natural truth to them. I will probably listen to it a few times in contention with the other episodes, and I recommend checking it out. True, many of these I have already familiarized myself with, but it compiles why I need to see this guy in person and just laugh in his presence. Good job, Marc Maron.

"Writing for Fun and Profit" by Ben Garrant and Tom Lennon
Being a fan of the State and Tom Lennon's work in general, I have been hearing about this book for months and finally decided to check it out. Boy, was it worth the price. It's honest and cuts out all of the fluffy bullshit (ok, it does pander, but only towards the end) to make for an informative and interesting quick breeze through the writing process and how to take criticism like a professional.
I don't know that this book will make me earn a billion dollars, but it does give me a realization about how the studios work and where each In In Out is in the Los Angeles county. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in seeing what options for screenwriting are out there.

Bridesmaids
Now, Bridesmaids may have not been the funniest comedy of the summer, but the Paul Fieg directed vehicle may be the one everyone remembers the most from this year. Not only was it a very successful R-rated raunchy comedy, but for many, it sparked the debate that women could be just as funny in a perverted nature. In truth, they're more discreet than say, the Hangover: Part II, but still, it's a matter of preference. Sure, there are enough laughs to qualify it for a great comedy, but this will be remembered notably for the sexual revolution in cinema. If anything, it already surpasses the other female-centric flicks of the summer, notably Bad Teacher. I guarantee you that this will be an important comedy in some regards in future, even if it's not the best.

The Order of the Triad Podcast
The Order of the Triad Podcast
Easily my favorite podcast as of now. The Order of the Triad features Nathan, who I think it one of the funnier nerds I've met. I praise this show a lot just because of him, but the rest of the cast has so much great chemistry that I laugh all of the way. Even when they're reviewing the Green Lantern the wrong way, I cannot help but enjoy their analysis. These are real nerds, familiar with the properties and not afraid to say so. Also, I LOVE their fanboy Gollum.
