MAN-EATING PLANT SET TO DEVOUR LONG BEACH!
LONG BEACH LANDMARK THEATRE COMPANY TO PRESENT LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
NOVEMBER 8th-17th

A man-eating plant will soon begin greedily consuming downtown Long Beach when Long Beach Landmark Theatre Company opens its deliciously devious production of Little Shop of Horrors.  This modern musical theatre classic has devoured the hearts of theatregoers for over thirty years, becoming one of the most popular shows in the world.

Little Shop of Horrors traces its roots all the way back to the 1960 black comedy of the same name, a ‘B’ movie that ran as the second feature to Mario Bava’s Black Sunday, and was quickly relegated to the late-night movie slots on local TV stations in the 60’s.  It was here, though, that it gained a cult following which grew exponentially and became the inspiration for the Off-Broadway musical that we know today.  Little Shop of Horrors, the first major musical from the powerhouse team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, premiered in 1982 to warm reviews and proceeded to grow in popularity and fame.  The show ran for 5 years, becoming the most successful Off-Broadway show in history, leading to the 1986 hit movie musical and later a successful Broadway revival.

Little Shop is a fun and outrageous musical romp,” said Artistic Director Megan O’Toole, “but it’s so much more than that.  It’s a Greek tragedy, a Doo-Wop musical and a ‘B’ horror movie all rolled up into one.  It’s a morality tale showing us what happens when we allow our base desires for fame, wealth and power to control us.  The plant may eat them, but the characters in this story are actually consumed by their own destructive desires.  In this production we embrace all the fun and goofiness of the show, but also strive to develop three-dimensional characters that the audience can relate to.”

Now in its fourth season, the Long Beach Landmark Theatre Company has been producing full-scale Broadway musicals for an avid and ever-growing audience.  Employing live professional orchestras, original sets and costumes, and luring some of the finest talent in the area to the stage, Landmark has built a reputation as a go-to for some of the best local musical theatre in the area, performing in one of downtown’s most beautiful historic buildings.
Little Shop of Horrors runs November 8-10 & 15-17, with Friday and Saturday performances at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm.  Tickets are $15-50, and available online at LBLandmark.org Performances are in the historic sanctuary at the First Congregational Church Long Beach in downtown Long Beach.
