TV Recap: Brooklyn Nine-Nine - "Hostage Situation"

The Golden Globe-winning comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns for a third season of hilarity and crime. After an impressive first season that chronicled one of the best new ensembles solving problems and forming unexpected relationships, the series is back to tackle bigger things. Will it be as great as the first season? Stay tuned every Wednesday for the recap on that week's episode to find out through interesting tidbits including the best jokes and what the crew is up to that week.

Crime of the Week: The precinct must figure out why their criminal wants to speak specifically to Gina (Chelsea Peretti).

Peralta Problem: As Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) finally decides to have a child with his new wife, Peralta (Andy Samberg) must help him get custody of his pre-infertility sperm from his ex-wife.

Subplot of the Week: Upon Santiago (Melissa Fumero) breaking Jeffords' (Terry Crews) nose, tensions rise and Santiago must live with her mistake.

Best Joke: When Holt (Andre Braugher) decides to diffuse the situation for a break dancer, he decides to do his own form of break dancing. Much to Peralta's disappointment, he is unable to film the results.

Culprit: The reason that the criminal wants to talk to Gina is because they went to high school together. She attempts to help get information out of him, but it proves to be a petty trip down nostalgia lane, and Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) must fix the situation.

Resolution: Boyle decides to man up and tell his ex-wife that he is going to have the child, regardless of her feelings of owning his sperm. Jeffords and Santiago come to terms with their debacle, accepting the situation as an accident. Gina doesn't help the day despite her best efforts, thus leaving Diaz to do her part in getting the information out of the criminal.

Verdict: Overall, another strong ensemble episode with a variety of payoffs. For starters, the Boyle story was especially silly, but almost too nonsensical to be that great. While it was great to find Boyle making euphemisms, the rest of the story felt a little too surface level to have any deeper substance. The Jeffords story was more funny, having a few lines from Terry Crews that were reliable and great comic fodder. However, Gina's story was possibly the most intriguing solely because it managed to be both a great twist and overall an ineffective way of handling the situation. As a whole, a really good episode with the cast in top form, though the uneven execution of the various plots keeps it from being great.
