TV Recap: You're the Worst - "Sweater People"

Left to right: Aya Cash and Chris Geere
Welcome to the TV Recap series on the FXX original series You're the Worst. Join me every Thursday to unravel the chaos of TV's greatest/worst romantic couple as they try to get their lives together. Will this be the week that everything works out? Who cares. As long as they don't miss Sunday Funday, everything will be fine. So get your trash juice ready and prepare to do what normal people don't do as I review the plot and other major points from throughout the season. Hope you're ready. If not, too bad. We're doing this anyways.

"Sleepy bitches lose the right to
use normal people phones."
- Honeynutz (Allen Maldonado)

Plot:

Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere) move in together. Edgar (Desmin Borges) has a new job. Lindsay (Kether Donohue) tries to move on after breaking up with Paul (Allan McLeod), but finds it hard. Gretchen and Jimmy realize that they have an addiction problem, but wonder how to live on without giving up their reckless lifestyle. Lindsay and Paul have sex, only for Paul to reveal that he cheated on his actual girlfriend. This throws Lindsay into disarray, turning to Edgar for solace and even planting a condom in Paul's house. Honeynutz is annoyed at Gretchen and puts her on a short leash. While the two end the episode worried about their problems, they don't solve them and end up stealing someone's car.

WVP:
"Head Wigglies"

This is exciting to see You're the Worst back, and in top form. However, it would be criminal to not just state that this week's worst valuable player was anything that gives you head wigglies. It is why Jimmy and Gretchen end up in all of their scenarios. They wind up in a destroyed living room, or naked in a car in a field. This feels like the start to a bigger issue of the season. Will the two actually work towards bettering themselves? Who knows. However, it's interesting to see them come to terms with their reckless ways. Will Gretchen's liver fall out if she doesn't stop? Not if Lindsay has something to say about them. Either way, this is quite the depiction of addiction in recent comedy. It's dark, funny, and the worst player this week.

Worst Moment

Saving the best for last, the episode ends with Gretchen and Jimmy visiting a liquor store. While things look to be going normal, we see the footage from security cameras - filming at fractured rates. As they see someone stealing their car, they run out to catch it. We see the car driving down the street as Jimmy runs after it, throwing the driver out and proceeding to just drive away, leaving the criminal unconscious in the street.

Was This The Worst?

Considering that season two opened on a high note, I don't know that we're anywhere near seeing the worst for the show or the characters. Even then, waking up naked in fields isn't the most reassuring place to be. Will Lindsay's life be pulled together, and will Edgar be there to help? Whatever the case may be, this is a hilarious episode that captures everything that's best about the series and it's fear of turning into sweater people. If this is the worst that the show gets, then hopefully the rebound will have a lot of great moments ahead. The cast is strong, the script is rich with profaneness, and we're already adding more lingo to the lexicon. This is quite an exceptional way to start the season. Hope it's smooth sailing ahead, kind of.
