Life Lessons from Maron: "Professor of Desire"

Welcome to the return of the recap series on the IFC series Maron in which comedian/podcaster Marc Maron lives life and tries to learn how to be a better person. To pay homage to the series, these recaps will be released on Saturdays and chronicle the various life lessons that are presented in the 30 minute format on a weekly basis as well as a meter that determines just how angry our protagonist seems to be. Join us as we tackle the psyche of the popular angry man and pray that he doesn't lose it entirely.

Plot: Marc meets his mentor and discovers that he is having an affair with a student that is manipulating him.

A Line That Sums Up the Episode: "This generation is different. They're emotionally right there with us."

Guests Review: There weren't too many this week. The episode opens with Jerry Stahl, whose involvement is mostly to discuss how sometimes a mentor isn't as great as everyone makes them out to be. There's also Adam Goldberg as the mentor, whose methods are very bizarre and focus around the love affair. He is a peculiar character who wears underwear on his head to get through his writer's block phase.

Anger Meter: 5 (out of 10)
What is there for Marc really to be mad about this particular week? Sure, he is dealing with his mentor, who turns out to be a major mess. At best, he is nothing more than contemplative this week, trying to figure out what the big appeal of being an artist really is. There are a few outbursts, but the only real breakthrough is that he has sex with the antagonist of the episode and discovers that maybe there's magic in his mentor's approach to writing. Otherwise, he's pretty chill this week.

We Good?: While not the strongest episode, it still is a consistently entertaining and bizarre look into the creative process. Marc's mentor in particular is a fascinatingly off character whose actions are at times confusing. The antagonist is also an interesting character. However, compared to the other episodes this season that have very concrete plots with abstract brilliance, this is simply an episode with a series of good moments. We don't get any closer to understanding the joys of being a writer, but at least we get to see that maybe Marc is not the worst artist mentally in the Maron world.
