TV Recap: Brooklyn Nine-Nine - "48 Hours"

Left to right: Kid Cudi and Andy Samberg
Welcome to a weekly recap of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is one of the funniest and freshest new comedies currently airing on TV. Follow us every Thursday as we break down the episode into all of the important beats from the plot to character moments that are worth giving another shout-out. With an all-star comedy cast, this recap series will hopefully give you the information you need as well as reason to watch Fox on Tuesdays.

Crime of the Week: Peralta (Andy Samberg) arrests Dustin (Kid Cudi) without sufficient evidence  of robbing a store and now has 48 hours to pull together something before having to let him go.

Peralta Problem: On top of having to pull together evidence in 48 hours, Peralta annoys everyone when Holt (Andre Braugher) forces everyone to help him and thus ruining their weekend.

Left to right: Terry Crews, Chelsea Peretti, Joe Lo Truglio
(front) Samberg
Subplot of the Week: Gina (Chelsea Peretti) and Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) get into an argument over who makes the best pies and decides to hold a test to see who is right with Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) serving as a tester.

Best Joke: With Jeffords (Terry Crews) showing total dedication to his job, he exercises in his sleep. In one of the show's best examples of physical humor, Jeffords is seen doing lifts on a bar in the office while falling asleep, leaving himself dangling.

Culprit: Moments before Dustin is let go, it is discovered that he pulled off the crime with the help of his friend. While he was never at the scene of the crime, a photo of him hanging out with the actual culprit in prison proved that he masterminded the situation in some manner.

Melissa Fumero
Resolution: Everyone goes home, tired and annoyed that Peralta ruined their weekend. Jeffords' older brother comes by and while he is intimidated by him, there is a sense of pride as Jeffords starts another mission. Santiago (Melissa Fumero) goes on a date. Boyle reveals that Diaz and Gina were wrong about the pies and that a different shop makes better pies. Jeffords actually crashes in Holt's office to the sound of whale noises. Peralta lands Dustin in jail at the last moment and feeling guilt, offers to buy everyone drinks when all they want to do is sleep.

Left to right: Jamal Duff and Crews
Verdict: It is great to see Peralta not painting himself as a superior anymore and instead trying to take the fall for his own selfish error. It is a notably strong episode considering that with everyone hanging around the office, it allows for a bunch of gags to go down that reflect a show with a lot of impressive characters. From Santiago's changing outfits to a flashback between Jeffords and his brother, this is packed with a lot of great laughs and character beats. The more that Jeffords moves away from feminine male to just a man trying to be masculine, the more that I feel that Terry Crews becomes an actual great component of the show. The pie subplot may have been simple, but it allowed for a lot of feuding among staff members and it helped Boyle to become the hero once again. Even the guest starring role of Kid Cudi had a lot of spectacular moments of undermining Peralta that makes me hope that the show manages to work guests in more often, though hopefully not as a gimmick.
