Nowadays, it is tough to look at some of these films and not get tripped up over their similar titles. Films like This is the End and The World's End are close enough to confuse even the most adept moviegoer. This is not nearly as egregious as when Warner Bros. announced recently that director Lee Daniels had to change the title of his latest film from The Butler to Lee Daniels' The Butler on account of it infringing on an existing title. We're not talking about Casablanca or a beloved classic, but a short film from the early days of cinema that up until this news you probably didn't know existed. So what is so special about this short, and why should we care that it changed the history of one lone film 97 years later?
The following is a compilation of simple facts that should help you distinguish the two in case it is brought up in conversation. While it may be very likely that this is all just going to be talk about the current number one movie in America, there's a good chance that you'll be asked to talk about the Warner Bros. short, if just to explain the addition of the director's name onto the title.
